Back from Yosemite

When my sister proposed going to Yosemite for three days I thought it was too short a time considering how far a drive it is but it was her trip and I was willing to go along with it just to get out there. It turned out we did quite a bit on the trip and had a lot of fun.

We left early enough Wednesday so that we were able to arrive in time to rent bikes and ride around. Thursday we hiked half dome (I had planned to climb it again but my climbing partner’s knee was not cooperative). It was good to just hike it again though to refresh my memory of it and I did get to have a little fun on the cable route. The view from the top of Half Dome is, of course well worth it however you get up there.

Life lesson learned? Go ahead and take those trips that don’t always “make sense”.

March 2006: Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour

I’ve been a fan of this festival since I first stumbled upon it while in Banff (Alberta, Canada). It not only delivers great films but it’s a fun event for the outdoors community as well. The ones I went to in Los Angeles and in Santa Barbara inevitably had a drawing for free prizes as a nice bonus.

Additionally, someone mentioned that the segment “Radical Reels” was entertaining this year and includes a Jack Russell Terrier who climbs!?!

“A Camping and Climbing I will Go…

….A camping and climbing I will go, Hi Ho the Dary Oh, A camping and climbing I will go…”

I only wish my shoulder wasn’t injured. I have a rotator cuff injury with tendonitis on top of it so says the Nurse Practioner I saw on Monday. I suspected something was up because it’s been hurting for months and didn’t get better even when I laid off climbing for awhile. But I’m going on this trip and will at least be out there in the wilderness again. I’ll probably do just 2 easy multipitch climbs that won’t take much upper body strength. I’m going to bring my camera along so I hope to come back with some great pics to share and hopefully some of good enough quality for me to sell as prints.

I may do some mobile blogging so we’ll see how it goes.

At the Intersection of Geek and Outdoors

Today I experienced a true geek moment. I went climbing today in the Santa Monica Mountains. It involved a long hike to a rock formation in the “back country” of the hills where I found that my Treo had not only a voice services signal but an internet signal as well.

While taking a climbing break I was able to check my email and see that a situation I had worried about was no longer an issue. Then later I made a follow up phone call on the situation.

It was great. Here it was a weekday and I was out at a rock formation with a great view, no one else in sight except my climbing partner and yet I had the peace of mind in knowing that if my would-be client needed help I was just a phone call away.

I love it when technology aids an outdoor lifestyle. I think I could used to this work for yourself thing too.

Climbing the “All Wood” Route

Well I surprised myself at the gym today. I finished the “All Wood” route on the overhanging part of the climbing wall. Basically, it entails climbing about 30 feet high using only the thin wood pieces for your hand and footholds. It’s like doing a campus board in a way — very “pumpy”, a bit of back and arm strength dependent, and hard on the fingers. I’ve tried this route once before and didn’t finish it without cheating. I started out this time and realized I was going faster than before. Before I knew it I was 3/4s of the way up… and I decided that I was not going to stop. I made it to the top and smiled. I guess I’m getting stronger :)

San Ysidro on Super Bowl Sunday

We went to climb at San Ysidro yesterday, the approach path has been drastically changed. We were part of a group of 7 people, I was in the lead and it was a good thing because I barely made out the remnants of the path that took us down from the main trail and eventually across the stream. Portions of the path had been swept away, large bushes were gone, and the once small stream was now fairly wide and swift enough to create portions of white water. By following the remnants of the path we were able to cross with some boulder hopping.

We arrived on the scene and I found one backpack, the climbers who owned it were not in sight. We did see Sage though!

Sage is the most adorable yellow labrador. She apparently is the Trail Dog. She lives in the house right next to the trail head and if she decides to hike with you she will just run out of her loosely fenced yard and act as if you were her best friend. She’s hiked with us around 4 times. She goes all the way to the base of the cliffs and then hunts for sticks or takes a nap while you climb. When you finally come down she bounds over to you, very happy to see you, and then walks back with you. She is the most adorable dog. Everyone who sees her thinks she is lost and secretly thinks in their head that if the owner isn’t found they will adopt her.

I’d post a picture of her but my camera’s batteries failed me Sunday… as did the back up batteries!

Anyway, climbing was great as always. And the day turned out to be a surprisingly social one. Aside from the 6 other people I was with, a group of four set up a climb to the right of Orangahang and it turns out I had met one of the women, she asked if I knew G and I was able to tell her that I had climbed Half Dome with him. Then we found out who owned the one backpack we had seen. Turns out it was a couple we had met about a year ago according to them. Eventually I recalled who they were too. Then we saw P, he’s there quite a bit, but he was more talkative than usual this time. Then was a pair of guys from UCSB, and a couple who wanted to climb with K next time. And finally a guy who K had wanted to climb with also showed up. I don’t think I’d ever seen so many people at the crag at once.

Well, with all the socialization going on (and due to the fact that I wanted to let the newer climbers in the group get as many climbs in as possible) I personally did not get to climb very much. I lead up Orangahang and set up an anchor for it and then cleaned up routes when we needed them done quickly. Mainly I was belay and advice giver (I asked first if folks wanted beta before dispensing it). I also did a lot of free soloing on the “descent traverse” which goes across the face of Many Happy Returns because I had to shuttle gear back and forth between folks and routes. I could have done a little more climbing once some folks took off but the guys wanted to get going to see at least some of the Super Bowl.

On a sad note: K broke off a critical hold on Vanishing Flakes! That’s terrible, especially since that is one of the few 5.11s I can climb cleanly.

We ended the day with alcohol, snacks and pizza before the TV. We only caught some of the half time show and then were surprised to see the score 7 to 7. We watched the rest of the game. I was sort of rooting for the Eagles, just for the underdog factor, but it was a pretty good game in general. The commercials didn’t seem as good as those in the past Super Bowls though. I remember my days at BBDO and being called in to watch the preview of their Pepsi Super Bowl spot (it was a big deal at the agency).

Balance Rock

A beautiful day today! Went out to Echo Cliffs but instead of hitting the cliffs like we usually do, we decided to finally check out Balance Rock which towers over them. A rock balancing on another rock, and me balancing on top of it.

One of the reasons I love climbing is that I get to go to places off the beaten path, or high above it as the case may be.
