At the Intersection of Geek and Outdoors

Today I experienced a true geek moment. I went climbing today in the Santa Monica Mountains. It involved a long hike to a rock formation in the “back country” of the hills where I found that my Treo had not only a voice services signal but an internet signal as well.

While taking a climbing break I was able to check my email and see that a situation I had worried about was no longer an issue. Then later I made a follow up phone call on the situation.

It was great. Here it was a weekday and I was out at a rock formation with a great view, no one else in sight except my climbing partner and yet I had the peace of mind in knowing that if my would-be client needed help I was just a phone call away.

I love it when technology aids an outdoor lifestyle. I think I could used to this work for yourself thing too.
