Pagerank info for Firefox: SearchStatus

I’m not sure how I overlooked this, the one thing I miss about IE is the ease at which I could check PageRank (using the Google Toolbar). Thankfully I’ve recently discovered that there’s a Firefox extension, SearchStatus which will not only tell you a page’s PR, but also give you its Alexa info.

From the developer’s website:

SearchStatus is a toolbar extension for users of both Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox, designed for the highly specialised needs of search engine marketers. The toolbar provides extensive search-related information about a site, all conveniently displayed in one discreet and compact toolbar.

For every site you visit using Firefox or Mozilla, SearchStatus lets you view its Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN - all in one place. This combined search-related information means you can view not only the link importance of a site (according to Google), but also its traffic importance (according to Alexa), so providing a balanced view of site efficacy.

The SearchStatus Mozilla/Mozilla Firefox extension appears unobtrusively at the bottom of the browser on the status bar. If you choose to view backward links for a particular page, they open in new tabs in the same browser window. Disable the automatic Google and Alexa queries and they fold away from view.

I installed it to Firefox but at first didn’t see the indicators. I restarted a second time and they appeared. They have a nice set of options so you can choose where the PR and Alexa info appears. For example, I currently have my info appearing in the “toolbar-menu” bar, to the “right of” the “menu-bar items”.

Another set of options, marked “Privacy” lets you exclude URIs you don’t want reported to Google or Alexa, and there is a check box that lets you connect using Anonymization.org. Great touches in my opinion.

I installed the extension on two copies of Firefox (1.0.2) - one is on an XP Home machine, the other on a Win 2000 box. I noticed on my Win 2000 computer, the display seems to jump around. This is after I altered the Privacy set of options. Perhaps I somehow changed the General Options while I was doing that? We’ll see if the problem persists. No issues with the extension on the XP box though.

All in all I’m quite happy with the extension and definitely recommend it.

Getting Things Done Index Card Version

My initial implementation of the Getting Things Done system was to use index cards. I took a set of regular A-Z tabs, turned them over and labeled them with my label maker. And OK I’ll admit it, I also cut them to shape using my exacto knife before sticking them on. The cards in the top of the box are blank and ready to record new actions. I liked this so much that It’s almost a pity I abandoned using paper for GTD since I got an old Palm Pilot.

Also in the shot you can see my Wacom Tablet tucked under a shelf on my desk. The power convertor for my laptop is NOT on the writing surface, by the way.

And, yes, I will be making a detailed post about my adventures with GTD :)

You Will Be Assimilated: a brief overview of Webcomic Collectives by Bill Duncan :: Comixpedia :: Covering the Digital Frontier of Comics Online

I read this because Neil (Dayfree Press) is in it but it’s also a good list of the different collectives out there.

I don’t follow any webcomic daily (sorry to my comic friends) but I do follow a few in which I read a bunch of archives to catch me up. I’ll not list them here yet for free of forgetting one.

PS Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Freecycle - Changing the world, one gift at a time.

Want to get rid of stuff without the guilt that it will go to waste? Post it here:

Freecycle

On the flip side you can also find someone else’s junk to be your treasure.

I haven’t tried it out yet but I can see how it would be handy come move time to get rid of a fridge or other big appliance or furniture.

Read some of Raph Koster’s keynote address from the GDC 2005. Link here to a transcript on the fly from the Wonderland blog.

Themes in the keynote are games as pattern recognition and as learning tools. It makes me think that the Puzzle Pirates people took note ;)

Brief Academy Awards Note

Overall I liked the Oscars show.

Chris Rock was a little harsh on the “stars, not stars” bit but I’d like to see him as host again to give him a second chance.

I didn’t like them presenting Oscars in the audience.

I liked that they had Yo Yo Ma performing a piece to go with the usual In Memoriam montage.

I’ve only seen 2 of the 5 nominated Best Picture movies. I plan to see the rest though.

In general, and in no offense to those involved — and unless Million Dollar Baby ends up blowing me away — I thought 2004 was a weak year for film.
